With certain exceptions with an existing recent certification, the registration cannot be activated or renewed without inspection. Some vehicles, however, are exempt, including antiques that are a quarter century or more old, motorcycles, autocycles, and certain heavy-duty gasoline-powered vehicles. Large diesel trucks are subject to a different set of rules. If there’s an emissions issue, your car’s check engine light will likely be illuminated.
